STWST-TV HUNDESPRENGUNG

Interactive live TV event as part of the programme “Niemand ist sich seiner sicher” (~ “Nobody can be sure of themselves
Ars Electronica 1991, broadcasted live on 3Sat & FS 2 (ORF)

Live TV art via satellite directly to the home and back: for Ars Electronica 1991, the Linz-based artists' association Stadtwerkstatt initiated a live TV play on several simultaneously occurring levels of action. The viewers in front of the screens are left to decide on the life and death of a dog by pressing a button on the telephone keyboard. After the ultimatum has expired, the vast majority of callers agree that the dog should be killed by blasting. The ignition is triggered. While the dog remains unharmed, the spectators in front of the TV sets explode in its place. The next day, the ORF, which is plagued by calls, presents the living dog to the worried public in “Oberösterreich Heute” and informs the population that it was a video trick. The dog is a studio guest on the regional news programme. Of course, this live broadcast of the Upper Austrian regional studio could also have been recorded one day before the actual blasting.
